Mathematics proficiencies Illustrations of practice

St Felix Catholic Primary School

Introduction

St Felix school staff studied the school data to find programs that would address the needs of the student cohort. The school employed a numeracy coordinator to assist teachers to develop strategies to teach the mathematics curriculum through the proficiencies. Staff engaged in some professional learning to improve their questioning techniques and to design quality tasks for their students that have multiple entry and exit points.

Students developed the mathematical language needed to communicate with each other and they became more confident and engaged in the learning. A positive change in attitude was observed in how the students participated in their mathematics class.
