Portfolio summary
This portfolio of student work shows that the student engages in social interaction to exchange greetings and to share ideas and information (WS4, WS5, WS6) related to their personal, social and school worlds (WS1, WS2, WS3, WS7, WS8, WS9). The student uses known phrases (WS6, WS9) to exchange ideas and opinions, for example, Non mi piace la pallacanestro (WS1, WS2, WS7, WS8). The student uses language to interact and to respond to classroom instructions, questions (WS8) and directions. The student approximates Italian sound patterns such as consonant combinations, clear vowel sounds and unaspirated consonants (WS1, WS3, WS8, WS9). The student uses gesture and some formulaic expressions to support oral interaction (WS3, WS8, WS9). The student uses well-rehearsed language (WS3, WS4, WS5, WS6, WS8, WS9) related to their personal experiences (WS8) (for example, stating preferences in sports, leisure activities and entertainment) (WS7), both in spoken (WS1, WS8, WS9) and written forms (WS1, WS2, WS5, WS6, WS7), and predominantly in the present tense (WS1, WS2, WS4, WS5, WS6, WS7, WS8, WS9). The student produces simple descriptions (WS5, WS8) with appropriate use of definite and indefinite articles, adjectives (WS3, WS5, WS6, WS7, WS8, WS9) and adverbs (WS1, WS2, WS4). The student connects ideas using conjunctions (WS1, WS2, WS7, WS8) such as e, ma, però, anche (WS4), perché- and invece to create simple texts using known vocabulary and structures (WS1, WS2, WS3, WS4, WS5, WS6, WS7, WS8).
The student identifies similarities between Italian and English and understands that they are related languages which borrow from each other (WS3). The student knows that literal translation between languages is not always possible (WS1, WS4, WS7, WS8). The student reflects on how culture is evident in experiences, images and texts. The student understands and uses metalanguage to explain aspects of language and culture, and uses simple statements to identify features of different text types. The student knows that language reflects contexts of situation and culture, and identifies differences between standard, dialectal and regional forms of Italian. The student analyses the impact of technology and media on communication and language forms, the influence of Italian and English on one another, and the interrelationship of language and culture. The student reflects on how they interpret and respond to aspects of Italian language and culture, and to intercultural experience, and identifies how their response may be shaped by their own language(s) and culture(s).
