Summary of task

Students studied choreography using a site specified by their teacher as a stimulus. The unit explored different spaces where dance can occur and provided students with the opportunity to choreograph their own work in a specific space. This was an informal assessment for learning whereby students formed small groups to explore their alternative performance space. Students investigated and examined the features of the space and how these features could be incorporated in their dance work. 

They were required to select two actions (this group chose jump and slide) that represented their space. Students then created a phrase based on these actions and included the choreographic devices, canon and unison. The movement was meant to reflect their allocated site and utilise its features. Students initially worked individually to create and organise movements as a way of exploring their allocated space. They then combined their choreography to make a dance that was site specific and developed it further for performance during the rehearsal process. The dance was eventually performed at the nominated site for their class.

Achievement standard

By the end of Year 6, students explain how the elements of dance, choreographic devices and production elements communicate meaning in dances they make, perform and view. They describe characteristics of dances from different social, historical and cultural contexts that influence their dance making.

Students structure movements in dance sequences and use the elements of dance and choreographic devices to make dances that communicate meaning. They work collaboratively to perform dances for audiences, demonstrating technical and expressive skills.

 

By the end of Year 6, students explain how ideas are communicated in artworks they make and to which they respond. They describe characteristics of artworks from different social, historical and cultural contexts that influence their art making.

Students structure elements and processes of arts subjects to make artworks that communicate meaning. They work collaboratively to share artworks for audiences, demonstrating skills and techniques.
